OSNA – THE NEW GENERATION OF SENTINEL LYMPH NODE ANALYSIS FOR BREAST CANCER
The sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become established as the gold standard for clinically node-negative patients with primary mammary carcinomas. To exploit the benefits of this procedure, the sentinel lymph nodes are often analysed intra-operatively. The investigation is often made using frozen section or imprint cytology with subsequent HE stain (haematoxylin-eosin). These histopathological methods, however, have limited sensitivity, as only a small section of the lymph node tissue can be investigated during surgery. In contrast, the OSNA® system allows the intraoperative analysis of the entire lymph node, thereby allowing a more accurate assessment of the extent of the metastatic spread. An earlier definitive decision on the necessary therapeutic measures can then be made during the surgical procedure.
• The entire lymph node can be analysed
• Intraoperative decision, immediate and reliable
• Clear indication of the axillary status
• Second operations can be avoided
• Immediate reconstructions possible
• Prompt initiation of further therapeutic measures
• Shorter waiting time and less stress for the patient
