A plant of superlatives

Some remarkable numbers show how Sysmex’s production facility in Neumünster is contributing to the advancement of healthcare.

Sysmex Neumünster

Date : 2017-09-29 Balises: Actualités, Germany, Norderstedt

Tucked away in an industrial estate in the north German town of Neumüster, the Sysmex plant that produces in vitro diagnostics reagents for the EMEA Region hardly catches the eye. Yet behind the somewhat inconspicuous exterior of the buildings lies a production powerhouse of spectacular dimensions. Once inside the production halls you soon realise that a manufacturing process of clinical cleanliness is under way: quietly running, carefully supervised and of large-scale complexity.

Millions benefiting

A portfolio of some 30 products for haematology applications is hardly breathtaking, but the plant’s daily output certainly is. Each working day, the Neumünster facility produces enough reagents for around 3 million patient analyses. “Much more than we ever thought,” admits plant manager Matthias Kutzner, Senior Vice President Reagent Production. “We never realised just how many patients are benefiting from our reagents until we added up the numbers.” But with the average daily output of reagents totalling around 100,000 l and just 0.035 l required for each test, the plant’s contribution to the advancement of healthcare really does prove beneficial to millions of patients. Each working day, six lorries are required to carry away the 180 pallets of reagents Neumünster produces from a single daily shift.

Productivity gains

“In recent years, we’ve invested heavily to increase both our output capacity and our productivity,” Matthias adds. The figures underline just how much more productive the plant has become: whereas in the 2006 fiscal year production at Neumünster was averaging around 3,500 boxes per day, the figure for fiscal 2016 was nearly 10,500 boxes – an almost threefold increase in just ten years.

Quality prioritised

“Another key focus has been on product quality,” Matthias adds. “On filters alone we spend around €280,000 a year. The salts we use are so pure they could be used in pharmaceutical products. And each box we pack the reagents in costs us €1.20 ¬– although you could also get one for little more than half that price. The difference is in the quality of the packaging. And we invest in top quality to ensure our products reach laboratories in perfect condition.”

The Sysmex reagent plants in the USA, China and Japan produce similar quantities of reagents to the same strict quality standards as at Neumünster. What inspires Matthias and his workforce of 50 also drives his colleagues at the other three plants: a heartfelt desire to advance patient health through producing reagents for in vitro haematology diagnostics of the highest quality – and in sufficient quantities to meet patient demand.
